Vic: Union begins dairy campaign

MELBOURNE, April 7 AAP - The Australian Workers Union (AWU) will tomorrow launch aVictoria-wide campaign to seek proper job entitlements for dairy industry workers.

AWU national secretary Bill Shorten claims some employees are required to work in excessof 90 hours per week while only being paid for 40.

"Other reports suggest workers are being charged high rents for sub-standard accommodation,"

he said in a statement.

"One farmer, a Victorian Farmers Federation member, told the AWU he and his young familyhad experienced similar problems in the past.

"This follows deregulation of the dairy industry and (shows) a need for the state governmentto ensure protection for low paid workers in rural industries."

Mr Shorten said the union was also concerned about future career prospects within the industry.

"It was reported that there are 3,000 vacancies in the dairy industry, yet a coursein dairy milking in Gippsland had been cancelled recently, reportedly because of a lackof interest," he said.

"Employers must recognise that low wages and exploitation of workers will always deteryoung people from entering the industry.

"The dairy industry is one of the cornerstone industries in this state and it shouldset an example to Victorian industry by providing fair treatment to all workers."

A series of industry meetings will be held across the state to alert workers to theiremployment rights, he said.
