NSW: Police admit letting guard down on alcohol crime

A senior New South Wales police officer says a decision to abolish full time licensingpolice a decade ago led to an increase in alcohol-related crime.

A Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research study says police find it easier to chargedrunk patrons rather than the owners, managers or staff of licensed premises.

Bureau director DON WEATHERBURN says less than two per cent of licensed premises areprosecuted for serving drunk patrons, despite evidence the problem is more widespread.

Assistant Police Commissioner BOB WAITES says the point Dr WEATHERBURN is making isthat police are not doing their job.

Mr WAITES says a decision was taken in the early 1990s to abolish full time licensingpolice -- a decision he says wasn't the right one.

He says fewer than 60 officers across New South Wales have the experience and capabilityto handle licensing issues.

Mr WAITES says he'd be looking for probably four or five times that many to be professionalfulltime licensing police.
